reshaping Futures

Anne Weprin
Point of Focus: Shoulder Injury
Age Group: 60+
One of my initial goals was to be able to strengthen the muscles supporting my shoulder to reduce chronic, recurring pain from “shoulder impingement syndrome.” Despite my passion for swimming, I had stopped swimming laps roughly 15 years ago because of my shoulder. When I first started training with Manny, about 3 years ago, we focused on incorporating strengthening movements that targeted specific back muscles, while also training to stabilize and condition my shoulders; he created a “homework” schedule for me to follow as outside support for the work we were doing together. In addition to overall stability, strength and conditioning through training (I felt stronger and family complimented me that I looked stronger), Manny gave me the confidence to try and swim laps again, which I have begun to integrate back into my health regimen.
Throughout our training journey together, there was an appreciation and awareness of adaptability relative to personal context; i.e., where you are in life, whether on that day, in that moment, or in the life cycle spectrum; and within that context, working to your best effort. He also focused on the importance of — besides cardio and strength training — including other trainings into a senior wellness program, such as balancing and foot reactivity. So, whether I want to play on the floor with grandkids, AND am able to get up, with the hope of side-stepping falls, it’s important to have an adaptable, contextual framework in mind —as well as the long game — so I can participate in the plans, or surprises, that happen in the moments of life.

Gonzalo Diaz
Point of Focus: Foot Injury
Age Group: 40-50
Before training with Manny, I had chronic inflammation in my feet, which appeared as persistent bunions. Leading up to my first session with Manny, I saw a podiatrist and an orthopedic surgeon. Both gave me a ‘wait and see’ approach and suggested more diagnostic steps when the inflammation was triggered again. During my initial evaluation, Manny took note of it and didn’t just consider it during my training, but rather started to focus on the ancillary anatomy to improve my strength and flexibility in my lower extremities. As a result, I was taking anti-inflammatory drugs almost monthly before training with Manny and now it’s been more than a year since I’ve taken any such medication.
Manny matches the attitude/energy of the client while offering several ‘approaches’ and almost grows with you as you accomplish more in your training. The focus on mindset is different from my other experiences with coaches. Almost like a life or professional coach, he finds a way to ‘check-in’ with both my physical and emotional state with each session. He takes note of progress and highlights what is working and what is not.

Point of Focus: Knee Pain

As a DJ/Producer from Miami, my job requires me to be on my feet for hours at a time. I was dealing with knee pain that was affecting both my work and everyday life, so I reached out to Emmanuel for help.
